Survey distributed to the 2004 Town Meeting Members

Arlington Tree Survey

Dear Town Meeting Member:

Last Spring, Town Meeting formed a Tree Committee to explore whether Arlington needed a bylaw to preserve and protect shade trees on public and private property within the town. We began meeting in January, and feel that it would be premature to propose a bylaw at this point. Our top priority at this point is gathering information about:

  • Public satisfaction with management of public shade trees.
  • Management of residential trees, and resources and materials that would be useful for property owners.
  • Perceptions of Arlington's community forest (street trees, trees in parks and on school grounds, trees on private lots) and attitudes toward bylaws that would protect large or notable trees.

Please complete this survey as soon as possible and place it in the "Tree Survey" boxes at the back of the hall by Monday, May 3. Town meeting members represent a broad cross-section of Arlington residents from all parts of town, and your answers will help determine our future direction and educational activities. Thank you for your cooperation.

Should Arlington consider a tree protection bylaw?

To help protect public trees and certain trees on portions of private property, some communities have passed ordinances that promote tree planting and require a permit to remove certain trees (usually native species or large specimens near streets or property boundaries). Each community defines which trees and situations are covered by such a bylaw.

If Arlington were to consider a new tree bylaw, it should emphasize (check all that apply):

___preserving native and noteworthy shade trees on private land
___protecting shade trees during demolition/construction on public and private land
___maintaining and replacing trees in public parks and school grounds
