From the Tree Committee

This committee was formed by 2003 Town Meeting and given this charge: "The Committee will report to the 2004 Annual Town Meeting on the advisability of enacting a Town bylaw that would provide for a program to preserve and protect shade trees on public and private property within the town. The Committee will investigate other cities' and towns' enactments which have been passed for this purpose."

The Tree Committee continues to investigate the advisability of a tree bylaw, but as yet does not have enough information to propose a bylaw or conclude that one is unnecessary. Our first year on the job convinced us that in the meantime it would be valuable to create one place residents could turn for information about our community's forest and its trees.

This web site is the result of that decision, and we hope it will be helpful whether you want to identify a tree you noticed while out on a walk, plan for a new addition to your garden, answer a legal question, or have a downed street tree removed from a utility line.
